CREATING COMMUNITY SFCS worked to restore the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, MS, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. This LEED® Gold certified building, is situated on 46 acres on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and accommodates 580-600 residents with three residential pavilions designed to withstand a category 5 hurricane. The community increases quality of life and provides a special place where our veterans can re-discover home. HONORING OUR HEROES The lobby provides access to commons level spaces including formal reception area, pre-function space, dining, Main Street, and the Hall of Honors. The commons level contains the main kitchen, chapel, clinic, bank, arts & crafts studios, post office, fitness center, recreation, administration, and other activities/services. Themed graphics, materials, and color support way-finding for residents. This 160,000 SF area represents the residents’ downtown or Main Street. ROOMS WITH A VIEW The overall geometry of the building is organized in response to the coastline and the orientation of the site. A typical resident floor has 24 apartments, 12 on each side with a larger room in the center for a couple. Each apartment is designed to have multiple layouts and roughly 450 square feet is provided for each resident. There is a view of the ocean from every apartment and a spacious balcony canted toward the ocean accommodates outdoor dining and socializing opportunities.
